For twenty years, roughly seven in ten change initiatives have fallen short — an estimated $2.3 trillion a year. The frameworks have multiplied; the number has not moved.
My argument is that we have been treating the wrong condition. Resistance is not the obstacle — it is the signal. It tells you something true about the conditions upstream: drained energy, narrow perspective, minds already full before your project arrived. The real work happens before the initiative begins.
Hence the name — in 1846, anaesthesia did not make surgery better, it made surgery survivable.
